Subject: WHO IS PERSECUTING WHO?

My Dear Fellow Muslims,

As-Salaam Alay-Kum

First of all, I must honestly admit that the more I read Naseer Ahmed Saheb’s rebuttals, the more I remain convinced of the fact that there is definitely an intellectual stagnation which has long plagued the Muslim minds.

What was utterly shocking was to read his statement that “ISIS is therefore carrying on the tradition of fighting to end kufr?” Is the learned Muslim out of his mind or what? In other words, beheading Christians, Jews, and Muslims, burning Muslims alive, oppressing those belonging to different faiths, even if it be Sunnis/Shias, must all be considered as an act of fighting the “Kufr. One ought to ask, whatever happened to the Qur’anic verse:

aw

Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lilAAalameena

(O Prophet!) We have not sent thee except to be a source of mercy to all mankind.

Surah: Al-Anbiya’ (The Prophets)Chapter: 21 Verse: 107

Can any Muslim reader on this forum or anywhere in the world step in to bluntly ask Naseer Ahmed Saheb, what the hell does he mean, when he specifically mentioned, “fighting to end kufr? At one given time, I pointedly asked him, “Will the real Naseer Ahmed Saheb stand up?” Apparently not, as there are too many hidden characters, which somehow or another always tilt towards those who are constantly violating the commandments of Almighty Allah.

Another sensitive point to note is that Naseer Saheb is, deliberately avoiding to post the entire sentence of Muhammed Yunus Saheb: “My take on how to rid the world of these ‘violent extremists‘ or ‘mad men‘ as Obama called them or ‘mad dogs‘ as Caliph Ali called their likes of his era.” How long will the “Muslim Intelligentsia, continue to cover-up the sins of evildoers? What is remarkable is that Naseer Saheb gives justification to the murderous rampage of ISIS by relying on one single sentence: “fighting to end kufr.

So many readers have been taking delight in reading Naseer Saheb’s articles as well as his rebuttals. It is obvious that one can classify him as another classic example of “Stealth Jihadist, who in one way or another approves of all the barbaric acts of ISIS. Interestingly, he reminds the readers of Ibn Kathir’s translation: “(Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease…) the disbelief, defiance and stubbornness they indulge in, and embrace Islam, obedience and repentance.” Did Naseer Saheb ever bother to reflect upon the three questions: “Who is living in disbelief? Who is being defiant? Who is being stubborn?” If ISIS is therefore carrying on the tradition of fighting to end kufr, then we must ask Naseer Saheb, “Which kind of kufr are they fighting to end?

Note that Naseer Saheb turns right back and asks each one of us, “You may call them whatever, but how do you refute them ideologically when their ideology finds such wide support. Their actions may horrify us but try to refute their ideology without discarding the nonsense that has crept into our theology.”

Does Naseer Saheb even look into the mirror and realize that he is one learned Muslim, who is equally responsible to give support and endorsement to ISIS, by ways of referring to Surah: Al-Anfal (Spoils of War) – Chapter: 8 – Verse: 38?

Surprisingly, what Naseer Saheb misses out is that Verse: 38 is addressed to “O Prophet,” and the next Verse: 39 is addressed to “O Muslims!,” as follows:

(O Prophet!) Say to the unbelievers that if they should desist,
that which is past will be forgiven them, and that if they should
return to fighting what had befallen those who had so behaved
in the past (will befallen them). [8:38]

(O Muslims!) you have no other alternative except to fight till
persecution ceases and the way of life is pursued in absolute
devotion to God. But if they give up (fighting), God will take note
of what they do thereafter. [8:39]

But if they do not respond (to this call for peace), then do not
lose heart); rest assured that God will protect you, excellent
Protector indeed is He and excellent Helper. [8:40]

More importantly, it is crucial to note that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (May Almighty Allah rest his soul in peace) by maintaining “The Humanistic Approach, in his commentary of the Holy Qur’an, summed up his views as follows:

“The Qur’an takes the occasion to emphasize that it did not call
upon the Muslims to take the initiative in war and pounce upon
others. War was enjoined on them in defense of the oppressed
and the helpless so as to rescue them from the clutches of their
oppressors. Repeatedly does it ordain never to go to war to
satisfy any personal or vicious desires but to do so solely in the
cause of God and to establish justice and peace in the land.”

Naseer Ahmed Saheb has dwelled so long in defining and re-defining his own understanding of Kafir and Kafirun, to such an extent that it seems like he is incapable to even ponder over another one of his articles titled, “The Much discussed and debated Medinian Verses Relating to Fighting, wherein he cited two Qur’anic verses from Surah: Al-Nisa’ (Women) Chapter: 4 Verses: 75 and 76 with the following explanation:

“The following verses are a command to fight to protect the
oppressed. It could be any kind of oppression or injustice against
any people. Those who fight to defend the oppressed fight in the
cause of Allah and the oppressors if they fight back, fight in the
cause of evil.”

It is truly unbelievable that for a Muslim with a fairly good understanding of the Holy Qur’an, he selectively picks and chose certain verses, but fails to apply his own conclusion, “it could be any kind of oppression or injustice against any people.” For the sake of sharing knowledge, I have taken liberty to extract two commentaries from Maulana Abul Kalaam Azad’s book, “The Tarjuman Al-Qur’an, pertaining to Verses: 8:38-40 and Verses: 4:71-76, which is attached at the end of this letter.

My earnest request to Naseer Ahmed Saheb is to stop being “Intellectually Dishonest, and answer all the respected Muslim readers of New Age Islam, as to WHO IS PERSECUTING WHO? Better yet, can he even explain the meaning of a sentence, “in absolute devotion to God?” The three questions which must be asked are as follows:

Question No: 1 – “Is it not clear that ISIS’s absolute devotion is towards Satan?”

Question No: 2 – “Is ISIS not engaged in persecution, oppression and mass execution of humans?”

Question No: 3 – “Aren’t the ‘disbelievers,’ the ones who absolutely violates the commandments of Almighty Allah?”

Finally, most of the ordinary Muslims will wholeheartedly agree with the questions raised, but not the “Stealth Jihadists” who are right in our midst. They won’t even dare, to refute ISIS ideology openly, as they are the ones, who are discreetly supporting their brutal assault against the humanity at large.

Kind personal regards,

Mohammed Rafiq Lodhia

The Noblest Vision Of Divine Disposition

Verse: 38 offers the noblest vision of divine disposition to forgive the weaknesses of men if only they seek pardon by making amends. Incidentally, it is a noble vision also of the peaceful character of the Prophet’s mission and his magnanimity. so noble was the attitude displayed by the Prophet against those who had opposed his mission!

It must, therefore, have been an extremely impossible situation created for him that at a certain stage in the course of his mission, he had to take up arms to defend himself against the onslaughts of his enemies.

In the beginning of the chapter it had been pointed out that the spoils of war should go not to any individual but to the State or to the community as a whole. Verse 41 details the manner of distribution of these spoils. A portion of the spoils was declared assignable to God and the Prophet (meaning thereby Head of the State namely the Prophet and he who would succeed him in office as Head of the State), and those who were charged with the task of utilizing the resources for the good of the community.

This verse and the other connected verses suggest that the State should primarily care for the uplift of the economically depressed or the needy. It was decreed that a certain portion of the State exchequer should be earmarked for this special purpose.

And know ye that whatever spoils of war ye obtain, a fifth- part
of it should go to God and the Apostle (the State) and to the
near of kin and to the orphans, and to the poor and to the
(stranded) wary-farer if you truly believe in God and appreciate
that (help) which We gave Our servant (the Prophet) on the
decisive day when the two hosts met (at Badr). And God hath
power over everything. [8:41]

In Defence Of The Oppressed And The Helpless

And now the Qur’an turns to refer to the intransigence of the hypocrites among Muslims in the matter of war with those opposed to the mission of the Prophet.

In every community, there are always some who are timid and lack the conviction of faith. Whenever a bold action is called for on the part of the community, not only do they abstain from participating in the action, but desire others to do likewise. But when a decision is taken to move into action, they sit on the fence watching the scene before from.

Should any mishap overtake those in action, they feel happy over it and rejoice that they were not with them. But if those in action succeed, they feel chagrined and regret that they were not with the others to enjoy the booty. They thus live a life apart from the life of the community as a whole with the result that they neither share their sorrow nor their joys.

In the early stages of the Prophet’s mission, there were several such individuals in the Muslim camp. The Qur’an gives a picture of their activity and styles them ‘hypocrites.’ The Qur’an takes the occasion to emphasize that it did not call upon the Muslims to take the initiative in war and pounce upon others. War was enjoined on them in defense of the oppressed and the helpless so as to rescue them from the clutches of their oppressors. Repeatedly does it ordain never to go to war to satisfy any personal or vicious desires but to do so solely in the cause of God and to establish justice and peace in the land.

O ye who believe! Prepare yourselves carefully and advance
in detachments or advance in a body, as may seem necessary.
[4:71]

And among you there are some who will surely lag behind, and
then if a reverse befall you, will say: “God hath been good to us
in that We were not in their company.” [4:72]

And should success attend you from God, they will be sure to
exclaim as if they had never been among you before: “How well
it would have been were we with them; we would have come by
a great gain.” [4:73]

(Let these know) that they alone fight in the cause of God who
barter the life of the present for the life to come; and him who
shall fight in the cause of God, whether he be slain or comes
out victorious, We will give him in the near future, a great
reward. [4:74]

And what hath come to you that ye fight not in the cause of
God and for the helpless men and women and children who
cry out in agony: “O Lord! Bring us forth from this city (Mecca)
whose inhabitants are oppressors and give us from Thee a
protector and give us from “Thee a defender.” [4:75]

They who believe, fight in the cause of God and those who
believe in the cause of Taghut, or of those who delight in
mischief. Fight then the champions of Satan. Mark! The
craft of Satan always proves futile. [4:76]

New Age Islam

Yunus Sb,

Each of your points addressed as the devil’s advocate.

1. The problem is ISIS regards all dissident Muslims as ‘kafirs’.

Yes they are. Please read the Munir commission report according to which each sect has declared every other sect as apostate. There is consensus of Ulema of every sect that the apostates are deserving of death punishment. There are caveats of course but such niceties are brushed aside.

2. They advocate forced conversion of all non-Muslims and particularly non-Muslim women, and killing them otherwise.

Please read my article: The Story of the Prophetic Mission of Muhammad (pbuh) in the Qu’ran (Concluding Part) Summary in which I have shown that For 14 translators, it is desist from “Unbelief” in verse 8:38 or its equivalent which implies that the Prophet (pbuh) was fighting against the kafirin to end kufr and not against the Religious persecutors to end persecution. They are: Yusuf Ali (from Unbelief), Al’-Muntakhab (renounce infidelity, desist from evil purpose and turn to Allah), Ali Unal: (to disbelieve themselves and prevent others from entering the fold of Islam), Muhammad Taqi Usmani (from infidelity), Syed Vickar Ahamed (from disbelief),Farook Malik (from unbelief), Dr Munir Munshey (their skepticism), Dr. M Tahirul Qadri (from their blasphemous acts), Ali Quli Qarai [faithlessness], Dr Kamal Omar (from their blasphemous acts), Thanvi (kufr), Raza Ahmad Khan Barelvi (kufr se baaz aye aur islam laye). Al Jalalayan: desist from unbelief and from waging war against the Prophet, Ibn Kathir: (Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease…) the disbelief, defiance and stubbornness they indulge in, and embrace Islam, obedience and repentance.

The ISIS is therefore carrying on the tradition of fighting to end kufr.

The list of crimes they commit in the pretext of following the true example of the Prophet is not endorsed by any school of law.

So outfits like ISIS, Boko Haram are quite unlike any other Islamic school of law,

My take on how to rid the world of these ‘violent extremists’ or ‘mad men’

You may call them whatever, but how do you refute them ideologically when their ideology finds such wide support. Their actions may horrify us but try to refute their ideology without discarding the nonsense that has crept into our theology.

Dear Muhammad Yunus Sb,

Al Azhar will not declare them Kharjites and they have said so in so many words for precisely the reasons I have cited in my article.

ISIS is only extreme in degree but their ideology is based on the three presumptions that I have listed which find wide support. They rely besides on the bizarre hadiths that may be ignored by the rest but are not trashed by the seminaries.

I do not have any great hope that the seminaries will act. The “moderate” Muslims need to know what the issue is and why the Maulanas will not act and disown the seminaries and the Maulanas as representing them and their Islam. The moderates need to forge their own theology and spread it and bypass the seminaries if they don’t fall in line.
